We're the backbone of internet service.

Fiber Network Operators (FNO’s) build and own the physical infrastructure that is used to deliver fiber to the home (FTTH) or business (FTTB). FNO’s trench and install fiber optic cables in the ground, also known as the physical layer of the network.

After the physical fiber cables (sometimes called dark fiber) is in place, the next step is illuminating the fiber. This is called Layer 2 or the data link layer. This layer caters for the encoding and decoding of light into data as well as managing any data errors that may result from the physical layer.

Installing ONT boxes.

At Home or the Office

An ONT or Optical Network Terminal is a little wall box that we'll install to get you connected to to our fiber network infrastructure. To connect the fiber outside to the ONT on the inside, a SplitNorth technician will visit the site and help you decide on the best route for the fiber cable to run and position of your ONT.

Getting you connected

Once your ONT box has been installed you’ll be ready to connect networking equipment such as Wi-Fi routers, switches and VOIP phones to a lightning fast internet connection.

Building a fiber network.

Fiber optic networks transmit data by sending pulses of light through a strand of glass that’s about the diameter of a strand of human hair. Fiber networks are capable of transmitting more data over longer distances and faster than other medium.
Lets take a look at how we build fiber networks:

Identify an area without fiber

We’ll identify an area that is not currently within fiber coverage or that’s only being served with legacy internet connections.

Register user interest in fiber

Next we’ll register the interest of the area’s residents in fiber broadband. Once we establish 30% uptake – we’re set to go!

Survey & obtain approval

After our engineers survey the area, we’ll get the necessary approval from your local council to start building our infrastructure.

Install fiber infrastructure

Next, we’ll begin to install the fiber infrastructure that’s needed to complete our network. With expert civil engineers on-site we’ll be done in no time!

Illuminate the dark fiber

Once our physical layer infrastructure is all set, it’s time for our fiber technicians to illuminate the newly installed dark fiber to get some data flowing.

Get you connected to fiber internet

All that remains now is for SplitNorth to connect your home or business with lightning fast fiber broadband internet so you can enjoy the internet unleashed!

Fiber Schools Initiative

As part of SplitNorth’s community responsibility initiative, we pledge to connect every school our infrastructure passes with FREE fiber internet.
