Frequently Asked Questions.
Can I get Internet in my area?
We are currently building the SplitNorth fiber network in Norton Shores and Muskegon. Our coverage will continue through multiple communities to the West of Michigan. Check our coverage map here.
Why do I have to register my interest?
Because we are constructing a new network, registering your interest helps us determine which areas to focus on. Click here to register your interest.
Why is Fiber Internet different?
Fiber internet is different because it does not rely on copper infrastructure. SplitNorth connects your home or business directly to the fiber infrastructure. This ensures a wider bandwidth for higher data throughput. Read more here.
Will I be able to connect my devices to the new network?
Sure thing! You can connect your smart or IoT devices via WiFi or ethernet connection.
What is Pre Sign Up?
You can Sign Up to our services before we start to build our network in your area and qualify for FREE installation. Check our coverage map here.
How will you avoid disruption while building the network?
Our network is built by experienced contractors who take the utmost care to avoid unnecessary disruption to the environment or damage to property. The installation of our infrastructure is also guided by local municipal authority approval to ensure compliance with the necessary health and safety standards. Additionally, we keep residents informed through continuous updates as we progress through an area.
Copper vs Fiber
If you’ve wondered what the difference is between pure fiber internet and the existing cable infrastructure, this is it in a nutshell:
Copper
- Download Speeds typically 5 to 500 Mbps
- Upload Speeds typically 1 to 50 Mbps
- Slow speeds during peak times
- High latency connection
- Less reliable infrastructure
Fiber
- Download Speeds 250 to 1 000 Mbps
- Upload Speeds 250 to 1 000 Mbps
- Network speeds stay relatively constant even during peak times
- Low latency connection
- Better network reliability
Connecting to the internet with an isp.
To connect to an ISP, you’ll need a wide area network connection, a modem and an active account. Let take a look at how you’ll be connecting to the internet:
Connecting to the fiber boundary box
Once a fiber network operator has installed all the necessary infrastructure, your premises will be connected with a fiber optic cable to your nearest boundary box.
Installing your on-premises ONT
Next, an Optical Termination Box will be installed in the most suitable location in your premises allowing your equipment to interface with the fiber network.
Connecting your router
In order to create a local area network, you’ll need a router to interface with your ONT box to distribute the connection across your LAN.
Configure your ISP account
Based on the connectivity package that you’ve selected from tour ISP, you’ll be provided with credentials to authenticate your connection with your ISP granting you access to the internet.
Internet for home users
If you are a home internet user, you’ll be connected with a fiber to the home (FTTH) service that delivers an affordable and stable internet connection suitable for most home applications.
Internet for business clients
Businesses often require a dedicated internet connection with low contention ratios and high priority service level agreements – therefore your business will be connected with a FTTB, or fiber to the business connection.
Fiber Schools Initiative
As part of SplitNorth’s community responsibility initiative, we pledge to connect every school our infrastructure passes with FREE fiber internet.
